This newlywed couple went the extra mile for their wedding photoshoot. James Sissom and Ashley Schmieder chose the most unlikely of locations to get married. After spending three weeks hiking, the couple decided to tie the knot at Everest Base Camp.

The epic wedding was held about 17,000ft above sea level, and it was the couple’s photographer who recommended the idea. Sissom, 35, and Schmieder, 32, will count their lucky stars that they went along with the idea. The couple got married in the most picturesque of settings, surrounded by mountains and glaciers.

“After much deliberation, we decided a traditional wedding was not the right fit for us,” Schmieder said. “As much as we would have loved to share our special day with our family and friends, we were both drawn to the idea of eloping during an incredible vacation.”

The California couple spent nearly a year planning the adventure to Nepal and wanted to do everything in their power to have a truly special wedding.

They ended up consulting award-winning destination and adventure photographer, Charleton Churchill. The artist was the one who came up the idea of using Everest’s Base Camp as the wedding venue.

“I had attempted base camp with another in 2015, but the devastating earthquake of Nepal including the massive avalanche that swept EBC, turned everyone around off the mountain” Churchill wrote in his blog. “I wasn’t sure if I would find another couple to get married on Everest anytime soon.”

“She said she wanted an adventure wedding and hadn’t chosen a destination, asking for my opinion. They were thinking tropical or some place enjoyable. I mentioned Mt. Everest base camp, and well…here we are now,” he said. Schmieder was convinced that Everest was the perfect location for them.

Because they chose to elope, there was no priest or minister that went up the mountains with them to conduct the wedding. Nevertheless, Sissom and Schieder committed to one another in the most beautiful of settings and then signed official papers when they returned to California, making the marriage legal.

Since the shoot, their wedding photos have gone viral, and there’s no surprise why. They are absolutely breathtaking.
