Have you ever worked at a job that you loved so much that you could not imagine ever leaving? That was the case for Loraine Maurer, who is now 94 years old, who has been working at famous fast food chain McDonald’s for 44 years. However, don’t think that she has had enough working there quite yet. Maurer does not have any plans to retire anytime soon, so for as long as she can, she will be working at the golden arches.
The cheerful and sunny 94-year-old told People magazine that: “If you don’t like your job, it’s a job, but I love it. The people, the clientele, that’s why I stuck with it.” To Maurer, it was more than just a job. It was her life. She shared, “I know what goes on with them, I know some of their children. Some ask me to say a prayer and I do. I know their lives.”
Maurer has worked at several different locations of McDonald’s in Evansville, Indiana, since 1973. Throughout the years, she has become a beloved member of the community, both at McDonald’s and in Evansville. Everyone, from loyal customers to her fellow coworkers, would offer to give her a ride to work and back home, particularly in the winter months, in order to help her out.
In order to celebrate Maurer and show their appreciation for her dedication, her current McDonald’s location set up a celebration for the loyal worker. Dozens of people showed up to the fast food restaurant to celebrate Lorraine and her years of dedicated service to McDonald’s and the local community.
Evansville McDonald’s storeowners Katie and Chip Kenworthy wrote a statement that read: “After all these years, she remains committed to serving her customers with one of the most delightful smiles around. Loraine has a loyal following of customers and they look forward to having her take their orders when visiting McDonald’s.”
In addition to having worked at McDonald’s for so many years, Maurer has also dined on the food at every shift throughout the decades. She even had it delivered to her home when she stayed home sick.
When asked what her favorite meal at McDonald’s is, she replied: “The fish sandwich. But now I work mornings and there isn’t anything I don’t like. This morning I had a blueberry muffin, two fried eggs and a cup of coffee.” However, she says something else is the reason she keeps going. “My customers make my life. I have traveled with them, gone to ball games with them. They’re friends, not just customers.”
