After the meeting concluded, the pair returned to the lobby of the building and posed for photos while being bombarded with questions from the press. Reporters asked everything from what the meeting was about to whether Kanye would be performing at President-elect Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Trump was quick to answer: “Life. We discussed life,” and also stated, “He’s a good man…we’ve been friends for a long time.” As the two posed for pictures to be taken together, Kanye kept very quiet, purposely not answering any questions, particularly any about his rumored performance at the inauguration. He responded to the reporters by simply saying, “I just want to take a picture right now.”
Since this meeting, there has been much speculation about what could have been discussed between the rapper and fashion designer and the President-elect of the United States. While many, including singer John Legend, have stated that the meeting was merely a publicity stunt, West has shared his personal reasoning for the meeting on Twitter. He tweeted: “I wanted to meet with Trump today to discuss multicultural issues. These issues included bullying, supporting teachers, modernizing curriculums, and violence in Chicago. I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future President if we truly want change.” He then added in the hashtag “#2024,” perhaps alluding to his own run for the Oval Office in eight years, also meaning that he is probably hoping for a second term for Trump.
While it is still unclear whether Kayne will be performing at the inauguration and what the outcome of this meeting will mean in the future, what is clear is that the people of Twitter are confused and unimpressed.
A day after Trump met with Kanye, he sent him a signed copy of the Time Magazine on which he graces the cover. Kanye was quick to tweet a photo of the magazine. The personalized note read: “To Kanye, you are a great friend. Thanks, Donald Trump.” As it is seemingly one of his favorite words, “great” was underlined for emphasis by Trump.
