Arguably one of the biggest parties of the year happens in Times Square where celebrities and their fans gather to ring in the New Year in style and splendor. This year, all the hype was on Mariah Carey who was set to perform in front of a huge crowd of eager fans. But not all went accordingly, and Carey brought 2016 out with a bang- or maybe it’s more accurate to say with a bomb.
While performing live at the famous Times Square New Years eve, her headset apparently malfunctioned leading to a disastrous lip-sync performance. The mega star was set to play two of her largest hits, “Emotions” and “We Belong Together” but couldn’t hear her own backing track and eventually gave up and stood on stage awkwardly. Her vocal track went on without her but Mariah just couldn’t seem to continue, instead, she huffed off the stage leaving her fans wondering what exactly went wrong.
The star seemed disappointed not only with the production team when she quipped, “We didn’t have a check for this song… we’re missing some of the vocals, but it is what it is. I’m just going to let the audience sing. We didn’t have a soundcheck for this New Year’s baby, it is what it is…” but also with herself. She continued talking to fans while on stage and added, “I wanted a holiday too, can’t I just have one.” Poor Mariah!
Despite a stone-faced exit from the stage and awkward pacing around with her backup dancers, fans still seemed to enjoy the festivities. Ryan Seacrest said it best as reported by The Sun, “No matter what Mariah does, the crowd loves it.”
Ever the diva, Mariah took Instagram following her disastrous performance to defend herself and posted the caption, “S**t happens… Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!… Here’s to making more headlines in 2017…” above a Giphy of herself.
Happy New Year Mariah, hopefully, you’ll make better headlines in the months to come.
