When Mille Maltby set her wedding date with fiancé Matt, she had a great idea for how to make their wedding day extra special. She would bake and decorate her own cake.
A talented, amateur pastry chef, Maltby designed a beautiful three tiered wedding cake, but when she and Matt arrived at the wedding venue in Brixham, England, they discovered a disaster in the back of the car.
The pair were married on September 2nd of this year, and drove over to their wedding venue at the Berry Head Hotel, but the unusual, early September heatwave caused a bit of a mishap with Maltby’s cake.
It seems the heat had caused the delicate buttercream to melt, and the cake couldn’t stand up. But Maltby was in luck, as another baker, Clare Vaz, who owns Patty’s Piece of Cake, happened to be making a delivery of her own when the couple pulled up.
Maltby wrote about the incident on her Facebook, “We were quite cautious to drive carefully. However, when we arrived and opened the cake box, it appeared that the hot weather caused the buttercream to melt and the cake just gave up.”
She continued: “I was a very calm bride and it didn’t seem to matter as I was marrying the man of my dreams and everything else seemed so insignificant. Matt, on the other hand, was heartbroken. He felt awful, as I had taken so long to bake and decorate the cake and I had been taunting him about how yummy the cake was going to be.”
But the quick thinking hotel staff, who knew Clare, asked if she would mind stepping in to help them repair the damaged wedding cake.
Clare shared on her own Facebook, “With time against me, I just didn’t have time to bake, cool and decorate a new middle tier, so thankfully I had a dummy cake which I used to create the new middle tier. I managed to near enough color-match the pink to the original cake too which was a bonus.”
She was, however, able to salvage the top and bottom tiers of the cake, so Matt got to taste Millie’s delicious lemon cake after all.
Clare did such a good job with the confectionary surgery that her cake looked almost identical to Millie’s prior to the disaster. Mille subsequently left an excellent review for Clare, sharing the couple’s story in a now viral Facebook post.
