Our country’s soldiers are some of the finest. There is certainly no doubt about that. Yet, we often forget to show them the appreciation they really deserve. Their sacrifice cannot be put into words, and it is important to keep that in mind.
Shlomo Rechnitz was not going to pass up the chance to really show his appreciation. Rechnitz was waiting in Ireland for his layover on a trip to Israel in the middle of November. In the airport, he saw something that did not sit well with him. Around 400 U.S. soldiers were also in the airport at the time, and Rechnitz noticed that a few of the soldiers were eating their field rations as a meal between flights.
It was at that point that Rechnitz sought out the commanding officer. He asked the officer if he could buy all the soldier a fresh hot meal instead of letting them eat their MREs. He offered to the officer to let all the soldiers purchase up to $50 worth of food from any of the restaurants at the airport and put it on his credit card.
Rechnitz, who owns several nursing homes, had no problem dishing out $20,000 for the troops. The commander approached him afterwards to ask him why he did such a thing. Rechnitz simply explained, “You guys risk your lives to protect me and protect my family…I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Of course, not all of us have the funds to treat a group of soldiers like that. However, we can certainly be a little more appreciative of our boys in uniform. One should always take the opportunity to thank anyone in uniform that puts their lives on the line for their country. There is no doubt that they will appreciate the thanks.
