Both now 81 years old, Joyce Kevorkian and Jim Bowman, are living proof that it’s never too late to find love. The newly reunited high school sweethearts dated in their senior year of high school in Illinois. They even attended prom together before they both went off to college in different states.

According to Kevorkian’s granddaughter Anna Smith, the couple grew apart over the years, both becoming married to other people for over 50 years. Unfortunately yet coincidently, five years ago Kevorkian’s late husband died after a massive stroke, and just last year Bowman’s late wife similarly died after stroke as well from Alzheimer’s. “Jim was in charge of the high school reunion, so he had my grandma’s address. Jim wrote her a letter, and she responded saying she’d like to reconnect and meet up,” Smith said.

In December the couple began talking on the phone for at least an hour every night rekindling the sparks of their long lost romance. Soon after that, they decided to take the plunge and finally meet up in person. After decades of being apart, Bowman drove down from his home in Illinois to see Kevorkian in Indiana at the retirement center where she has been living.

“When he came and saw her, he said it felt like no time had passed and they had picked up where they left off,” Kevorkian’s granddaughter said. Smith continued “When I talked to her on the phone about it she was all giggly. You could just tell that her entire mindset had shifted. She was just so much happier.”

After staying a whole week in Indiana, Bowman bid his lady adieu and headed back to Illinois. A few days after Bowman had returned home from his visit, Kevorkian received an unexpected phone call from him. Bowman had asked Kevorkian to marry him! Smith revealed, “My grandma told him ‘that sounds like a good idea.” The couple tied the knot on April 1, 2017, at Kevorkian’s retirement home with the clever theme of the wedding being “two old fools.”

“It was just a really sweet wedding. The best part is just how happy they both are. They’re both talking about what they are going to do in the future. When you watch them, it’s like two high schoolers that just started dating. It’s really nice.”
